An equation is an equality between two expressions containing one or more unknowns. Solving it means finding the values of the unknown that make the equality true.
Adding or subtracting the same quantity on both sides, or multiplying them by the same non-zero number, keeps the equation equivalent.
3x + 5 = 20 → 3x = 15 → x = 5. Check: 3·5 + 5 = 20 ✓
The same principles apply, with one difference: multiplying or dividing by a negative number flips the direction of the inequality.
−2x > 6 → x < −3
